My AdobeMAX 2013 Session Outlines and Some Videos Too

Greetings all! I’ve been home less than 24-hours from MAX2013, and what can I say? It was an incredible event this year. And while I have a separate “MAX Wrap-Up” post planned, I wanted to first post a few things that I promised during my sessions.

Here’s a link to download the session outline from my class entitled, “Advanced Audio Techniques for Voice-Over Recording

This includes the images of the microphones mentioned during the class, as well as snaps of many sample external soundcard options, pre-amps, etc.

And the video itself (it’s about 1hr03minutes long):

Additionally, you can also grab the outline for my DSLR Editing for Photographers and Designers Class.

And the video too:

As mentioned during MAX, AdobeTV just published a three-part series I recently shot on DSLR Editing, which includes not only Premiere Pro, but Adobe Prelude CC and a section of DSLR Multicamera Editing, featuring the AMAZING new ‘audio sync’ feature, an exciting new addition to Premiere Pro CC. Those episodes are posted below (Parts 1-3)

Tomorrow I’ll be posting the additional classes, “Edit What You Want: Ingest and Selection with Adobe Prelude”, “Advanced Mixing Techniques” and “Encoding For Web and Tablets”.

Till then…

Adobe After Effects and Maxon Cinema4D: Welcome to the Family

As many of you have heard and seen, we revealed the next version of After Effects at NAB2013 (and have officially been showing After Effects CC at AdobeMAX this week), and the ‘big’ news was that we now offer a true, live 3D Pipeline directly into Maxon Cinema4D. Build your models, bring them into After Effects, go back to C4D and make changes, and they update inside AE’s composition panel. No rendering, no re-importing or messing about, just working the way you’d (hoped) you could work…and we finally made it happen.

I was fortunate to not only meet a bunch of the guys from Maxon (and present alongside one of their finest, Mathias Omotola) but the more I’ve played with this feature (pre-NAB/MAX, and since then) I can honestly say that it sincerely makes 3D ‘accessible’ to the AE compositor who simply thought the 3D/2D worlds were too far apart; or in most cases, simply fearing that 3D was too difficult.

Me and Mathias on the last day of NAB2013

Me and Mathias on the last day of NAB2013

Nick Campbell (from Greyscalegorilla) and Dave Kiss (from the Maxon team) put together this great video highlighting the workflow, the capabilities, giving you a taste of ‘the buzz’ from the show floor (including clips from the my After Effects/Maxon presentation with Mathias.

Not long after we finished our last demo of the day, we caught up with none other than Mr. ScruffyTV himself, Kanen Flowers. Though I’ve known of Kanen for years, we only officially met at the San Francisco Supermeet back in January. In one of those rare, “I met you five minutes ago and I feel like I’ve known you my whole life,” kinda moments, we re-connected at NAB, shared a few laughs, did a quick interview, and then snapped a few post-tradeshow pics in the spirit of fun and total exhaustion. :)

We were getting a little loopy by the end of the show...

At this point, we just couldn't stop laughing. Good times.

At this point, we just couldn’t stop laughing. Good times.

The weeks that followed were filled with lots of comments from attendees of the show to those who experienced my demos ‘live from the stage’ on AdobeTV; but the nicest thing about all of it? Everyone seemed genuinely excited about this new direction for AE and this much-needed partnership in the 3D modeling world.

At the end of each presentation, Mathias concluded with the line, “Welcome to the family.” Perfect words for a perfect (and long-awaited) coming-together of technologies.

Welcome to After Effects CC and Cinema 4D as they were meant to be: working together.

Day 3 NAB – The Buzz Continues!

Just a quickie following another packed day on the show floor. Hard to believe that it’s all over tomorrow, but in many ways…it’s just beginning (wink)!

This is pretty much what it's looked like the whole time. Uncropped pano from my Creative Cloud preso

As day 3 is typically ‘hump day’ and many begin to exit Vegas in droves, we were somewhat a-stereotypically slammed! And, as if the huge crowds weren’t enough…we even continued to have several noise complaints from neighboring booths (sorry guys…we didn’t mean to be loud). But hopefully some of the traffic that was blocking the aisles made their way to our friends along the perimeter.

Aside from the After Effects/C4D integration, Refine Edge Tool/Refine Soft Matte and naturally, *all* of the Premiere Pro editing enhancements (which have been met with spontaneous applause, nearly every time), the other big hit of the show has been SpeedGrade. The talk around SG has really grown over the last year…but with some of our new shot-matching capabilities and redesigned UI, along with the Lumetri Deep Color Engine and LUT capabilities being present in the ‘revealed’ version of Premiere Pro, I sense a lot of people moving to SpeedGrade not only as a solution for grading their materials, but for creating LUTs and color presets to use in and out of Premiere, After Effects and Photoshop. Case in point: as I walked by the RED booth today, I saw a demo being given to a packed house, showcasing Epic 5K footage being graded in SpeedGrade (showcasing several of the new features). Beyond cool, and what a slick confirmation that the word is out!

3300+ CreateNow Attendees Can’t Be Wrong! (an Elvis reference)

The word is definitely out; and while the word (according to Beatles legend) is love (and they’re right, it is), the *other* word is Creative Cloud; and our Adobe friends in Europe clearly love it.

Following the successful shows in Warsaw and Oslo, the excitement and enthusiasm continued as we made our way thru London, Stockholm, Copenhagen and Helsinki. What was most interesting to us was the universal acceptance of the Creative Cloud and a genuine interest in how it differs from the (previous) ‘boxed product’ experience. Fortunately, we came armed and ready with all the details about the new applications, features and services that we’ve added to the Creative Cloud (since our official launch last May) and that momentum continued as we were able to showcase several new PS features (as of February) and most recently, the addition of Photoshop Touch on the iPhone and Android mobile devices.

A sincere thanks must go out to all of the attendees across the globe, as well as our many colleagues who helped put these incredible events together. This tour really exceeded our expectations, and we’re just so very honored to be able to bring all of these incredible, creative puzzle pieces, all together under one roof. The show continued on (back in the US) in New York, Boston, Seattle, Austin and San Diego with more stops coming! Create now!

On our one day off (in Oslo) we took in some sightseeing...and ice.

Ask A Pro Friday session: Get Started Creating Video with Adobe Creative Cloud

This Friday I’ll be hosting yet another Ask A Pro session, this time dealing with the basics of getting started with video using Adobe Creative Cloud.

You can register for the online event HERE.
AAP Banner
This session is meant to be for beginners who have not used the video products before, and who are looking to enhance their skills, going beyond the video capabilities found in Photoshop and/or Lightroom.

I’ll begin with a brief overview of how to use Adobe Creative Cloud, and from there I’ll dive right into asset review, ingest and basic rough cutting (with Adobe Prelude); sending media to Adobe Premiere Pro for more editing capabilities, sound mixing, and working with basic effects, and the final section will deal with delivering your video to any device/tablet/screen with Adobe Media Encoder.

Register NOW! Hope to see you there.

How To Make Your Audio Broadcast-Safe (ITU-R BS.1770-2 & EBU)

Over the last year I’ve had numerous requests for ‘…a plugin that would allow me to instantly conform my audio files to a particular loudness standard.’

The good news is: we have this feature built-in to Adobe Audition. The not-so-good news is that while I’ve shown this feature several times (in various tutorials), it’s always been part of another video (which makes it extremely hard to find, even for me!).

So, I’m happy bring you a standalone video on how to finalize your audio, in compliance with common Broadcast Standards using Adobe Audition CS6…

What’s also really cool? You can use Audition’s Match Volume feature to normalize dialogue tracks, compute average loudness across a host of music/underscore files, and instantly normalize (either peak or RMS) to any given value. Oh, and there are even MORE loudness options available to you as well (in a drop-down menu)

CS6 Adobe Video Day coming to Eastern Europe

Just before year’s end, I’ll be hitting the road to present CS6 Production Premium (and Adobe Creative Cloud) in Czech Republic, Slovakia and Poland.

Unlike the launch tour we did back in the summertime, this seminar series will focus solely on video production workflow. Most of (if not all) content will be from my recent shoot in Africa with some additional materials from some recent interview docs I shot over the last year. For this, I’ll be showing my actual process from capture to ingest (largely shot on Nikon D800 and D4 DSLRs), logging to rough cut, re-cut to post-processing, audio sweetening and mobile delivery. Of course, the main ‘theme’ underlying all of this is how I’m also using Creative Cloud as part of this workflow, not only using the applications themselves, but the services involved as part of the Creative Cloud offering.

There’s still time to register (links below) and we’ll even have a few on-stage surprises for you (ok, I’ll spill the beans…I think I’m going to be doing some live, on-stage recording…something I haven’t really done in about 7 years. We’ll have instruments, we’ll have microphones, and my esteemed colleagues will be joining me to cut some live, music-to-picture)

I’m still working out the formal agenda, but I will post that in the next few days.

For Czech Republic & Slovakia, CLICK HERE.

For Poland, CLICK HERE.

While not a full-on Masters Tour (like the ones we’ve done in the past), this is a really great opportunity to meet with inspired customers, deep-dive into the applications and the actual real-world workflows, and also get a few hours to share some face time, ask questions, and have a genuinely good time.

Hope to see you there!
