I was in Warsaw 16.11 and a saw your tips and tricks for mixing audio. I would like to ask you about something but there was not enough time . Maybe you know where I can find information about how professional remove echo (I recorded the sound in different rooms which diffrent acoustics – I use boompole with mic senneheiser). Can you give me some advice where I can find some good tricks?
Hey Waldek. Unfortunately, there’s really no ‘trick’ to removing echo, nor is there a completely effective process for doing this. The general rule is, while you can sometimes remove ‘decay’ of echo (using a combination of downward expansion/gating), and enhance presence of a given signal (ie, a voice in an echoey hall), you still won’t be able to remove ‘the distance’ from the subject to the mic, which is really the fundamental issue. I once had a tutorial on this years ago, but there are just so many factors involved, it’s not something that you can do easily, nor is very effective. There are some plugins that claim to ‘de-echo’ a signal, but honestly, I’ve never heard anything that doesn’t produce A TON of artifacts, ie, making it rather useless. The best method is basically three steps: 1) try to gate any echo or decay with a gate or downward expander effect; 2) find the fundamental of the frequency you’re trying to preserve, and use very subtle notch and/or graphic equalization to enhance the presence of the signal; and 3) perform an overall compression (ratio approximately 2:1, not much more) to smooth out general dynamics and give everything a slightly more ‘present’ feel. I capture music from any source, and edit it with Adobe Audition CS6.
I recently came across Soundsoap 4.0 from Soundness.
It sounded interesting and I bought it.
This software will run as a standalone application or as a VST plugin.
I have it running and working on Win 7 Professional 64 bit.
My interest in buying was to use it as a VST plugin in Audition CS6.
Neither the 32-bit ore 64-bit plugins work in Audition CS6.
I have exchanged severel e-mails with Soundness’ Support to no avail. They finally told me that Audition CS6 has a “Bypass” function which I need to turn off.
Do you know of thjis “Bypass”, and if so, can you tell me how to turn it off?
Hi John. I’m not sure what they’re referring to w/regard to Bypass (yes, there are several ways to bypass effects) but VSTs must be added/enabled before you can use them (and maybe that’s what they were alluding to). Under the Effects Menu, access the Audio Plugin Manager all the way at the bottom. You’ll first want to Scan for Plug-ins (assuming they’re installed in the standard location; you can even add additional install paths, if you changed the default) and then enable. I don’t have CS6 any longer and haven’t used Soundsoap as a VST, so I can’t really comment further. You’ll also only need the 32-bit version of the plugin, as Audition only became a 64-bit host in CC. Hope that helps. –JL

I enjoyed your workshop on Adobe software during College Media Association 2013. I had a quick question if you don’t mind. You told us about a special deal for students for adobe master collection at 19.99 per month. My question is: is it better for me to purchase the entire master collection from my campus for about 800 dollars or do it monthly (although I’m a student for only 3 more months). Which one would be a better investment in your opinion? I would like to do professional video editing.

Hey Bahar! Thanks for the nice comments. With regard to your purchase inquiry…$800 is certainly a great deal on Master Collection, however the Creative Cloud option just honestly, offers more, and offers more moving forward. Frequent updates, other products which can help you market said videos, etc (like Muse, Edge, Business Catalyst for Website hosting, unlimited iPad app creation) all of these things…you just ‘get’ them. Not to mention other things like Acrobat Professional. As I said in the seminar that day…you think you only need Reader until you need to make/modify a PDF! And then there’s just the bottom line of ALWAYS being current with Creative Cloud; always having the latest versions of the software. If you were to buy the ‘boxed’ MC now, you would undoubtedly have to upgrade at some point. And it’s no surprise that we typically announce things around this time (around NAB) so food for thought there. It’s a shift, moving to the Cloud…but our Members really love it; and with even new added services like free Pro Accounts with Behance (to showcase your artistic creations) it’s yet another benefit, another way to expand your audience/creative community, and one more reason to jump to the Cloud. Dear Jason Levine, Thank you for your thorough answer on this, I really appreciate it. With regards to that, I’m actually starting to learn Premiere, and I’m not at all well-trained on the Adobe products, so I thought getting the cloud for the first year may not be useful since I will not be using all of the awesome features anyways. And thought I could use that 600 dollars toward a permanent product. Can I get your opinion on this as well? Thank you again
I record a lot of tutorial videos demonstrating tools I create for 3ds Applications and I was wondering how can I set the overall average audio level to a good solid volume/loudness. I’ve found that a few times when playing back my recordings ive needed to blare the volume. I was wondering if there was a tool in Audition that allowed me to easily control the base volume without making it to ear piercingly loud. Aside from that I’m not sure what a good base volume is. I tried to look around online for a video demonstrating this and I couldn’t find one.

Hi John. Thanks for the inquiry. There are several tools in Audition that can ‘level’ your audio and make it presentable without the need for constant volume tweaking (up or down) during playback. This is where compression and limiting come into play, of which we have several options. A quick and dirty method would be to use something like the Multiband Compressor. This effect will simultaneously allow you to compress/even the input signal, and by implementing the Brickwall limiter (which is part of the effect) you can set a digital ceiling to prevent digital clipping, all the while increasing the output to a nice, loud, even level. But of course, it’s very easy to overdo and just because something hasn’t exceeded 0dB doesn’t mean the signal isn’t digitally ‘clipped’ (hence why a lot of recorded music today actually sounds ‘distorted’ though it’s still technically within legal limits). Another option would be to use something like the Match Volume panel. This is more ideal if you’re processing multiple audio files simultaneously and simply want them to all have the same loudness, whether that’s Perceived Loudness, RMS, Peak Amplitude (something different altogether) or in the case of Broadcast delivery, conforming to the ITU/EBU loudness standard (for which I also shot a video; you can find it and many others on the blog here as well as on my AdobeTV channel). Typically, when delivering final, mixed audio (that is voice only) I like to keep things around -8dB; now, that’s an RMS/loudness value which you can verify using the Amplitude Statistics panel in Audition; the ‘peak’ shouldn’t exceed -1.0dB or thereabouts. I generally won’t advise going any higher than -0.5 simply because you don’t need to, and again, I would recommend setting the ceiling to -1.1 (or even as low as -6dB, depending on where you’re delivering the final content) with the brickwall limiter (or even our Hard Limiter).
